Dr Mohamed Otify, Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynaecological Oncologist, provides advanced pelvic ultrasound imaging to assess the uterus, ovaries, and pelvic structures.

Whether you're experiencing symptoms such as pelvic pain or irregular bleeding, or simply seeking reassurance, you will receive a clear diagnosis in a calm, comfortable environment with results you can trust.

What Is a Pelvic Ultrasound?

A pelvic or gynaecological ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of your internal reproductive organs — particularly the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.

This non-invasive procedure is one of the safest and most effective methods to evaluate causes of pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, or other gynaecological concerns. Ultrasound involves no radiation and requires no recovery time.

When You Might Need a Pelvic Ultrasound

Your consultant may recommend a pelvic ultrasound to:

  • Investigate pelvic or abdominal pain
  • Assess abnormal or heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Evaluate irregular bleeding or bleeding between periods
  • Examine pelvic masses or lumps detected during examination
  • Assess ovarian cysts or fibroids
  • Monitor known gynaecological conditions
  • Screen for ovarian or uterine abnormalities
  • Provide reassurance and peace of mind

A pelvic ultrasound provides valuable diagnostic information that guides appropriate treatment decisions.

Types of Pelvic Ultrasound

Transabdominal Ultrasound:

A small probe covered with gel is placed on your lower abdomen to obtain images of pelvic organs. This approach provides a good overall view of the uterus and ovaries.

Transvaginal Ultrasound:

A slender probe is gently inserted into the vagina to provide more detailed, close-up images of the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding structures. This method often provides superior image quality for assessing internal pelvic organs.

Your consultant will discuss which approach is most appropriate for your circumstances.

Preparing for Your Scan

Before the scan, you will be asked to remove some clothing and lie comfortably on the examination couch.

For transabdominal scans:

  • You may be asked to arrive with a moderately full bladder, as this helps provide clearer views of pelvic organs
  • You can empty your bladder immediately after the scan

For transvaginal scans:

  • A full bladder is not required
  • The procedure takes only a few minutes

The team will explain exactly what to expect beforehand and ensure your comfort throughout.

During the Scan

Most pelvic ultrasounds take 5-10 minutes. The procedure is usually painless, though you may feel slight pressure for a few moments during the examination.

Your comfort is always the priority, and the team will talk you through each step of the process.

Safety

Ultrasound imaging is completely safe — it uses sound waves, not radiation, and has no known side effects. It is the same technology used for pregnancy scans and can be repeated as often as necessary without any risk.

When You'll Get Your Results

In many cases, Dr Otify can discuss your findings with you immediately after the scan. This allows for instant reassurance or immediate planning of next steps if further investigation is needed.

If more detailed review is required, a comprehensive report will be provided, usually within a few days. This report can be shared with your GP or other healthcare providers to coordinate your ongoing care.
