Cervical Cancer Screening: Quick, Safe and Reassuring Smear Tests

Understanding the Importance of Cervical Screening

Dr Mohamed Otify, a Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynaecological Surgeon, offers private cervical screening (smear tests) to detect early cell changes that could lead to cervical cancer. Regular screening saves lives — it's a quick, simple test that can prevent gynaecological cancer before it develops.

What Is a Smear Test?

A smear test, or cervical screening, checks for:

  • Certain high-risk Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) types that may cause cell changes
  • Any abnormal cervical cells (known as dyskaryosis) that could become cancerous if left untreated

The goal is early detection and timely treatment — often years before cervical cancer would appear.

Why Cervical Screening Matters

Cervical screening is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer. Research suggests that up to 83% of cervical cancers could be prevented if all eligible women attended their routine smear tests. Early detection means cell changes can be treated before they progress — protecting both your health and peace of mind.

Who Should Have a Smear Test?

NHS guidance recommends cervical screening for:

 • Women aged 25–49 every 5 years

if HPV negative (every 3 years or more frequently if HPV detected)

 • Women aged 50–64 every 5 years

Even if you haven't had penetrative sex, you may still contract HPV through close genital contact. If you've missed your test or prefer a private option, you can book directly for private cervical screening with results returned promptly.

Preparing for Your Test

Aim to book your appointment mid-cycle (around one week after your period ends). Avoid spermicides, lubricants, pessaries, or vaginal creams for a few days before your test. These simple steps help ensure the most accurate results.

During the Test

The procedure takes only a few minutes. A small speculum gently opens the vagina, and a soft brush collects cells from the cervix. The sample is analysed for HPV and any abnormal cells using liquid-based cytology.

The test is usually painless, though mild discomfort can occur. Relaxing your pelvic floor and taking deep breaths can help.

After the Test

Results are typically available within two to three weeks. Depending on the findings, you may:

  • Return to routine recall in 3–5 years if normal
  • Be asked to repeat the test if the sample was inadequate or HPV positive
  • Be referred for colposcopy if both HPV and abnormal cells are detected

A colposcopy is a detailed cervical examination under magnification performed by a specialist gynaecologist.

Cervical Cancer Is Preventable

Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can be prevented. This quick, simple test could save your life — so even if you feel anxious or embarrassed, it's worth doing.
